What Hath Bird? is about my tumultuous relationship with bebop; specifically, the cult of virtuosity surrounding Charlie Parker. Football Season is Over quickly took on a life of its own, and now stands as a separate work. The electronic part is made up entirely of recorded speech, and the title is taken from Hunter S. Thompson’s suicide note. The piece is a memorial to Thompson, and serves as a personal response to the particular cultural criticism that makes up the bulk of his writing.
