alto saxophone and electronics (CD or laptop)
performed here by Randall Hall
When I started writing Football Season is Over, my goal was to rework an earlier piece of mine, What Hath Bird?, for alto saxophone and drum set. What Hath Bird? is about my tumultuous relationship with bebop; specifically, the cult of virtuosity surrounding Charlie Parker. Football Season is Over quickly took on a life of its own, and now stands as a separate work. The electronic part is made up entirely of recorded speech, and the title is taken from Hunter S. Thompson’s suicide note. The piece is a memorial to Thompson, and serves as a personal response to the particular cultural criticism that makes up the bulk of his writing.
