About:

Melati Invention started as a purely electronic piece that I would put on and listen to, and was more of a framework for improvisation. It was Ingram Marshall, whom the piece is dedicated to, that suggested I try to fix it into some kind of live performance piece. Four years later, I finally got around to it. My title Invention is taken from the 18th Century pieces by J.S. Bach, where invention was used as a word meaning to show some kind of technique, or inventiveness with technique; pieces with that title are usually pedagogical in some way, and so it is with this one. My invention is a study using delay effects in various guises. The piece draws heavily on Bach’s Invention in C minor, which in and of itself is also concerned with echo effects.
